NEW LONDON, N.H. – September 19, 2017 – The Colby-Sawyer College women's volleyball team fell to 15th ranked MIT, 3-0, on Tuesday evening at the Hogan Sports Center. The Engineers won by scores of 25-19, 25-14 and 25-18.
MIT improves to 12-0 and will play a tri-match at Coast Guard Academy on Saturday. The Chargers fall to 3-9 and will play at Simmons tomorrow evening at 7 p.m.
The Engineers were paced by junior Abby Bertics (La Jolla, Calif.). She registered 14 kills on .414 hitting. Sophomore Alexis Groark (Huntington, N.Y.) added nine kills on .471 hitting and a match best 10 digs, while senior Alli Davanzo (Saint Johns, Fla.) contributed six kills on .625 hitting.

Naarah Cox (Boston, Mass.) hit an impressive .556 and finished with five kills. She added two solo blocks and a block assist. Junior
Courtney Murray (Quincy, Mass.) recorded a team best seven kills and eight digs. Sophomore
Rebecca Straubel (Altamont, N.Y.) had three aces and seven digs.
The Chargers raced out to a 5-0 lead in the first set and held an advantage until MIT scored six points in a row to take a 10-9 lead. MIT then started to click offensively and finished the frame with 17 kills, led by nine from Bertics. Two of Straubel's aces came in the set to keep the Chargers close at 25-19.
After a service ace from Colby-Sawyer's
Morgan Flynn (Reading, Mass.) opened the second set, MIT used a 10-2 run to take command of the set. Murray had four kills for Colby-Sawyer, but the Engineers hit .400 to take the set 25-14.
Colby-Sawyer continued to battle in the third set, hanging with MIT for the first several points that saw four ties and a couple of lead changes. Trailing 22-12, a Murray kill started a strong run for the Chargers to close the gap before MIT closed the set by a 25-18 margin. Cox had three kills on five attempts in the set for the Chargers. MIT received multiple kills from four different players, led by Groark with four.
