Box Score WENHAM, Mass. - September 1, 2017 - The Colby-Sawyer women's tennis team defeated Gordon, 7-2, in a season opener for both teams on Friday.
The Chargers go to 1-0 and will host Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) preseason favorite Nichols tomorrow at noon.
Colby-Sawyer won the top two doubles matches by identical scores of 8-2. Senior
Ashley Woodside and freshman
Yashu Yang combined at the top spot, while senior
Evelyn Miller and junior
Aislinn O'Connor won at No. 2. Gordon's lone doubles point came in the third spot by an 8-6 score. Katherine Jefferys and Caitlin Kwok defeated senior
Lauren Blanchard and junior
Maddy Gemerek.
The Chargers took command of the match in singles play by taking five of six contests. Woodside won at the top flight, while Yang recorded her first collegiate singles win at the second flight by a 6-2, 6-2 score. Miller and O'Connor won at No. 3 and No. 5, respectively, in straight sets. Blanchard dropped the first set 7-5, but battled back to take the second set 6-2 to force a third. Blanchard took the third 10-7 in a super tie break.
Berry recorded a win for the Fighting Scots in the fourth slot.
