WINTER HAVEN, Fla. - March 11, 2017 - Senior
Justin Devoid (Quechee, Vt.) went 6-for-7 with four RBIs and three runs to lead the Colby-Sawyer baseball team in a doubleheader split with Becker on the opening day of the 2017 season.
Colby-Sawyer won the first game 14-6, while Becker took the second game 9-6.
Each team goes to 1-1 after the first day of action. The Chargers will play a doubleheader against Framingham State on Sunday at Lake Myrtle beginning at 3 p.m.
GAME ONE - Colby-Sawyer 14, Becker 6
Colby-Sawyer began the season with hot bats from the first inning. The Chargers would score in five of the seven innings.
Junior
Connor Henry (East Boston, Mass.) knocked in junior
Doug Avellino (Woodstock, Vt.) to open the scoring. Devoid then brought in senior
Nathan Frongillo (Haverhill, Mass.) who reached on a hit for the 11th straight game dating back to last season.
Each team put a run up in the second inning as the Chargers took a 3-1 lead into the third.
After a scoreless third inning, junior
Joey Fenuccio (Keene, N.H.) came around on an Avellino single.
Becker got back in the game in the fourth after Nicholas Harriman (Harrisville, R.I.) hit a two-run homerun to right field to cut the deficit to 4-3.
The Chargers once again responded and created separation with four runs in the fifth. Junior
Brendan Thurber (Ashland, Mass.), Fenuccio, senior
Jackson Musco (Litchfield, N.H.) and Frongillo each tallied an RBI in the frame.
The Hawks got two back in the sixth to cut the deficit to 8-5, but Colby-Sawyer put the game out of reach in the seventh with six more runs. Henry and Devoid each had two-run doubles in the inning, while Avellino and Thurber added RBI singles.
Becker added a run in its final at-bat to end the game in favor of Colby-Sawyer 14-6.
Devoid went 4-4 and a walk with three RBIs and two runs. Avellino finished 3-3 with two runs and two RBIs, while Fenuccio added three hits and three runs. Henry knocked in three runs on a pair of hits.
Senior
Chris Mitchell Jr. (Avon, Mass.) got the win after six innings of work. Junior
Andrew Carbone (Lynnfield, Mass.) gave up a run in the final inning of work.
Senior Tyler Wagar (Uxbridge, Mass.) suffered the loss after allowing five earned runs in four innings of work.
GAME TWO - Becker 9, Colby-Sawyer 6
Becker got on the board first in the second inning with a two-run homer from Michael Bianco (Manorville, N.Y.). The Hawks added another run in the inning with an RBI single from Kevin Perez.
The Chargers quickly tied the game in their next at-bat with three runs. Junior
Brady Dion (Sabattus, Maine) knocked in Devoid with a groundout and junior
Tim Donovan knotted the game with a two-run double.
In the top of the third, a Chris Testa (Providence, R.I.) RBI groundout to short scored Josiah Shepherd (Providence, R.I.) to put the Hawks back on top 4-3.
Colby-Sawyer once again came Charging back with a run in the bottom of the third on an RBI double from Devoid to tie the game at 4-4.
Becker would score four runs in the top of the fourth and added another run in the sixth to go in front 9-4. Sophomore Tanyon Ventres (Holden, Mass.) drove in a pair of runs for the big hit in the inning.
Colby-Sawyer got a pair back in its final at-bat, but Becker hung on for the 9-6 victory. Freshman
Tim Unczur (Danvers, Mass.) notched his first collegiate hit in the inning, while freshman
AJ Cavossa (Foxborough, Mass.) knocked in his first run.
Daniel Diaz (Teaneck, N.J.) earned the win after allowing four runs while striking out five batters in five innings of work. Tanyon Ventres finished the game with two hits and three RBI to pace the Becker offense. Kevin Perez also chipped in with a pair of hits.
Senior
Michael Fazio (Auburn, Mass.) was saddled with the loss after tossing the first four innings. Senior
Jake Greaney (Groveland, Mass,) gave up one run and struck out two in two innings of relief, while junior
Andrew Clay (Hopkinton, N.H.) had a strikeout in a scoreless inning. Devoid finished with a pair of hits, while Donovan had a team best two RBIs.
