Women's Soccer Falls to Middlebury, 4-1

NEW LONDON, N.H. – September 7, 2016 – The Colby-Sawyer College women's soccer team fell to Middlebury College, 4-1 on Wednesday afternoon.

Middlebury goes to 1-0 and will play at Connecticut College on Saturday at 11:30 a.m. Colby-Sawyer evens its record at 1-1 and will play at Keene State on Saturday at 1 p.m.

Each team tried to tilt the field in their direction for the opening minutes until the first chance of the match came from the foot of Middlebury's Adrianna Gildner (Woodville, Wash.) at 4:53. Colby-Sawyer freshman goalie Sam Mitchell (Chester, N.H.) was up to the task and saved the first shot on target of the match.

Colby-Sawyer's first great chance came 32 minutes into the half when the team was awarded a set piece from 35 yards out. Junior Corrie Hoyt (Lebanon, Conn.) sent the ball towards goal, but it glanced off the crossbar and out of harm's way.

The Panthers got on the scoreboard three minutes later after a failed clearance by the Colby-Sawyer backline. Senior Amanda Hotvedt (Eagan, Minn.) took a shot over the outreached keeper for the 1-0 lead.

Middlebury doubled its lead 1:05 later when Hotvedt set up a chance for junior Emma Shumway (Arlington, Va.) who finished the one-timer.

Five minutes into the second frame, Colby-Sawyer was awarded a penalty shot after a foul occurred in the box. Sophomore Abbie Sansoucy (Douglas, Mass.) finished inside the left post to cut the deficit in half and give the Chargers their first goal against the Panthers since 1983.

The Panthers responded with two goals from senior Katherine Hobbs (Menlo Park, Calif.) and Gildner in a 2:38 span later in the half to secure the 4-1 victory. Hobbs ripped a shot into the opposite corner from a tough angle, while Gildner's goal came via the penalty kick.

Middlebury keeper Kate Reinmuth (Olympia, Wash.) earned the win and made two saves.

Mitchell played well in net for Colby-Sawyer, making several good decisions to come out of the goal area to stop the Middlebury pressure. She finished with seven saves.
