NEW LONDON, N.H. – September 24, 2016 – The Colby-Sawyer College and Castleton University women's soccer teams played to a 2-2 tie in North Atlantic Conference (NAC) action on Saturday afternoon.
Colby-Sawyer goes to 1-5-1 overall and 0-1-1 in the NAC and will play at Gordon on Wednesday. Castleton goes to 1-5-3 overall and 0-1-1 in conference play. The Spartans will host Lyndon on Tuesday evening.
Perhaps the end result was fitting that the NAC preseason poll co-favorites played to a 2-2 draw in their lone regular season meeting. Colby-Sawyer held a slim edge in shots 16-12 and corner kicks 4-2, but the match was evenly played throughout.
The home team struck first with the lone goal of the opening 45 minutes. Junior
Corrie Hoyt (Lebanon, Conn.) sent a pass over the defense to a rushing
Lizzie Jorgensen (Manchester, Vt.). Jorgensen was able to get a touch and control the pass and then flick the ball over the oncoming keeper for her second goal of the season.
Castleton found an equalizer in the 59th minute when senior Shelby McLenithan (Bennington, Vt.) sent a cross through the box to senior Bri DiPhilippo (Falmouth, Maine) who deposited the ball into the wide open right side of the net.
Four minutes later, the Chargers regained the lead off the foot of senior
Rachel Quaye (Wesminster, Mass.). She was set up by a nice through ball from sophomore
Abbie Sansoucy (Douglas, Mass.).
The Spartans wasted little time to knot the score once again with a game-tying goal from freshman Makenzi Bellando (Carver, Mass.) 26 seconds later. In similar fashion to Castleton's first goal, senior Eva Clark (St. Albans, Vt.) sent a cross to Bellando to the opposite side of the goal where she finished for her second tally of the season.
Neither team could break through in two overtime sessions to send each team home with a point for the tie.
Colby-Sawyer keeper
Sam Mitchell (Chester, N.H.) made three saves, while senior Jessica Binkowski (Goshen, Conn.) had five stops for Castleton.
