Women's Soccer Edged by Regionally Ranked Wheaton, 2-1 in Double Overtime

NEW LONDON, N.H. – September 21, 2016 – The Colby-Sawyer College women's soccer team was edged 2-1 in double overtime by Wheaton College on Wednesday afternoon.

Wheaton, which is receiving votes in the national poll and is ranked fourth in New England, improves to 8-0 and will resume New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) on Saturday with a 1 p.m. match at WPI. Colby-Sawyer falls to 1-5 and will resume North Atlantic Conference (NAC) action on Saturday with a 3:30 p.m. home match against rival Castleton.

After the first 71+ minutes went scoreless, Colby-Sawyer finally broke through with the game's first goal. The Chargers were granted a free kick after Wheaton committed a foul 40 yards away from goal. Sophomore Abbie Sansoucy (Douglas, Mass.) took the kick and sent it at Lyons keeper Leann Wolf (Santa Maria, California). Wolf tried to catch the ball, but had it ricochet off her to the oncoming forward, senior Rachel Quaye (Westminster, Mass.). Quaye deposited the ball into the open net for her first goal of the season.

Time was winding down in regulation when Wheaton was granted a free kick at the top of the 18 yard box. With a wall 10 yards in front of her, senior Brooke Collard (Orange, Calif.) shot the ball over the defenders and into the upper left corner of the net to even the score at 1-1 with 1:15 left to play.

The first overtime was evenly played with no real chances at net.

Junior Megan Healy (Huntington, N.Y.) sent Wheaton home with the win with 2:01 left in the second overtime as she headed a ball home off a cross from freshman Katharine Chura (Metuchen, N.J.).

The Lyons held a 17-11 edge in shots, while shots on goal were even at eight apiece.

Colby-Sawyer keeper Sam Mitchell (Chester, N.H.) made six saves, while Wolf had seven for the Lyons.
