NEW LONDON, N.H. – September 10, 2016 – The Colby-Sawyer College women's volleyball team split a pair of matches on the final day of the Granite State Challenge.
The Chargers fell to Keene State 3-0, but rebounded with a gritty 3-2 win over Plymouth State. In other matches that took place at Colby-Sawyer; Keene State defeated Daniel Webster 3-0, Rivier defeated Daniel Webster 3-0 and Rivier earned a 3-2 win over Plymouth State.
Keene State 3, Colby-Sawyer 0 – 25-18, 25-23, 25-12
The Owls received a match best 14 kills from junior Rachel Lamica (Malone, N.Y.) on .333 hitting. Freshman Hannah Syzmanski (Greenwood Village, Colo.) hit .500 for seven kills. Junior setter Katie Cunningham (Nelsonville, N.Y.) recorded a double-double of 29 assists and 12 digs.
Leading the way for Colby-Sawyer was sophomore
Courtney Murray (Quincy, Mass.). She had eight kills. Senior
Gabrielle Rodriguez (Rancho Cucamonga, Calif.) chipped in seven, while freshman
Naarah Cox (Boston, Mass.) collected six kills and three block assists.
Colby-Sawyer 3, Plymouth State 2 – 14-25, 25-15, 16-25, 25-22, 15-12
The Chargers trailed 2-1 after three sets and were behind 22-17 in the fourth before an 8-0 run evened the match at 2-2. Colby-Sawyer was then able to hold on for the five set win.
Freshman
Micaela Cardozo (Woodbridge, Conn.) led Colby-Sawyer with 10 kills. She added a match best six aces, to go along with 13 digs. Freshman setter
Olivia Goodrich (Epping, N.H.) had a match-high 28 assists. Freshman
Jaia Woodland (Charlottesville, Va.) was a force at the net offensively and defensively. She had seven kills and six total blocks. Freshman
Caroline McCoy (Longmeadow, Mass.) added a team best 16 digs.
Plymouth State had three players with double digit kills led by senior Kayla Wyland's (Melrose, Mass.) 16 on .333 hitting. Senior Brianna Wojtas (Salem, N.H.) had 11 kills and four total blocks, while senior Mikki Taffe (East Hampstead, N.H.) hit .500 for 10 kills. Junior Brenna Peruch (Cave Creek, Ariz.) tallied a match-high 21 digs.
