NEW LONDON, N.H. – October 30, 2016 – The Colby-Sawyer women's soccer team defeated the University of Maine at Farmington, 3-2 in Sunday's North Atlantic Conference (NAC) quarterfinal contest.

Colby-Sawyer improves to 8-8-1 on the season. The Chargers will travel to Bangor, Maine on Wednesday to play second seed Husson in the NAC semifinals. UMaine-Farmington drops to 7-11.  

UMF began the game with the first flurry of scoring opportunity in the 18th minute. The Beavers took three shots towards the net in a 30-second span and had one blocked, one hit the crossbar and one saved by Colby-Sawyer senior midfielder Kelsey Campbell (Upton, Mass.).

After the Chargers regained momentum, sophomore Amanda Martin (Amesbury, Mass.) notched the game's first goal with a bending ball into the upper right corner of the net from 20 yards away.

Colby-Sawyer doubled its lead six minutes later, off senior Rachel Quaye's (Westminster, Mass.) sixth tally of the season. Freshman Molly MacLure (Westford, Mass.) took an initial shot that went off the post and ricocheted to Quaye who cleaned up for the goal.

The score remained 2-0 in favor of the home team until the opening minutes of the second half. The Beavers were awarded a free kick, three minutes into the frame, at the top of the Colby-Sawyer 18-yard box after the Chargers committed a foul. Sophomore Ashley Gleason (Scarborough, Maine) sent the ball into the right side of the goal away from the outstretched arms of Colby-Sawyer keeper Sam Mitchell (Chester, N.H.). The goal was Gleason's team leading 12th of the season.

Molly MacLure put Colby-Sawyer back in front by a pair in the 64th minute with a curving ball that snuck in the far post. Martin set up the play with a back pass from the end line.  

UMF responded six minutes later to cut the deficit to one goal. Junior Haley Murano (Brunswick, Maine) checked into the game at 68:47 and was immediately involved in the action. Murano was in traffic in front of the net when she gained control of the ball and scored 31 seconds after she entered the match.

The Colby-Sawyer defense was able to hold off any more threats and secured the 3-2 victory.

Mitchell made one save in the match, while UMF keeper Kiana Thompson (Industry, Maine) also made one stop.

The Chargers had a 13-9 edge in shots and a 7-4 advantage in corner kicks.
