NEW LONDON, N.H. – May 4, 2015 - The Colby-Sawyer women's tennis team will play 35th ranked Babson College of the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) on Friday in the NCAA Tournament First Round. The match will be played in Williamstown, Mass. at Williams College.
BRACKETColby-Sawyer (12-10) will make its third straight NCAA Tournament appearance and fourth overall after winning Sunday's North Atlantic Conference (NAC)/North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) crossover title. The Chargers are no stranger to the tennis courts at Williams as the Chargers played an NCAA Tournament match there against Ithaca two seasons ago. The Chargers and Beavers last met on September 4, 2011 in Babson Park. The Beavers won the match 9-0.
Babson (15-8) won the NEWMAC title in the fall over MIT, 5-4 to earn the conference's automatic bid. The Beavers will be making their first NCAA Tournament appearance.
The winner of the Colby-Sawyer/Babson match will play the 16th ranked Thoroughbreds of Skidmore (13-8) on Saturday.
The other Friday first round match is between Endicott (19-4) and Farmingdale St. (14-1). The winner will play the regional host and top-ranked Ephs of Williams (20-0) on Saturday.
The teams will play a single-elimination tournament with the first-, second- and third-rounds played at regional sites, Friday-Sunday, May 8-10, or Thursday-Saturday, May 7-9. Ohio Northern University and the Warren County Convention and Visitors Bureau will host the team championships finals, which will be held May 18-20 at Lindner Family Tennis Center in Mason, Ohio. Student-athletes selected to the individual championships will be announced Wednesday, May 6.
The championships provide for a 49-team tournament. Automatic qualification (AQ) is granted to 40 conference champions, which form "Pool A." One team was selected from true independents and schools from conferences that do not have an automatic bid for their champions (Pool B). The remaining eight teams are selected from those teams in conferences with automatic bids that did not win their conference's AQ and the remaining Pool B institutions (Pool C). The teams are geographically paired, whenever possible.
