Panthers Earn Non-Conference Win Over Chargers

NEW LONDON, N.H. – April 2, 2015 – The Colby-Sawyer women's lacrosse team lost in a non-conference tilt to in-state rival Plymouth State Thursday afternoon, 16-4.

With the win, the Panthers improve to 5-3, while the Chargers drop to 3-4.

Plymouth State set the pace of the game early by scoring the first six goals and controlling the time of possession throughout the first half. The Chargers were able to find the back of the Panther net at the ten-minute mark, but Plymouth would answer with the finals four goals of the half, taking a 10-1 lead into halftime.

The start of the second half mirrored the first half with the Panthers scoring the first four goals. Colby-Sawyer would finish the game scoring three of the final five goals in the last eight minutes. The Panthers would go on to win 16-4, outshooting the Chargers 28-17 in the game.

Plymouth State was led by a nine-point performance from senior Amy MacDonald (Hull, Mass.). MacDonald led all scorers with five goals and four assists in the win. Sophomore Caroline Vonachen (Framingham, Mass.) netted three goals while sophomore Kaitlyn Wilder (Framingham, Mass.) and freshman Allie Buckley (Old Lyme, Conn.) each earned a pair of goals and a pair of assists for the Panthers.

Junior Caitlyn Whearty (Hampstead, N.H.) scored a pair of goals for the Chargers. Junior Sara Berry (Bowdoinham, Maine) and freshman Nicole Lavigne (Berlin, Vt.) each netted goals in the loss.

Plymouth State senior goalie Casey Curran (Framingham, Mass.) stopped nine shots and earned the win. Her counterpart, sophomore Meghan Castellano (Wallingford, Conn.) picked up eight saves in the loss.

Colby-Sawyer returns to North Atlantic Conference play Saturday when the Chargers travel to Thomas College for a 3:00pm draw. Plymouth State will face Little East for UMass Dartmouth on Saturday.
