HENNIKER, N.H. – March 25, 2015 - The Colby-Sawyer College women's lacrosse team sailed past in-state rival New England College 19-8 Wednesday evening in North Atlantic Conference (NAC) action.
With the win the Chargers even their overall record at 2-2 on the season and remain undefeated in the NAC improving to 2-0. The loss drops the Pilgrims to 1-7 overall and 0-1 in the NAC.
The two teams exchanged goals early in the opening half as
Alyssia Janak began the scoring for the Chargers just 11 seconds into the game followed by a Pilgrim goal by Jacquelyn Lane at the 24:21 mark. Colby-Sawyer turned up the offensive pressure over the next five minutes of play scoring five straight goals, including two by
Nicole Lavigne. NEC would get a goal back thanks to Lane but Colby-Sawyer closed out the half with a 5-0 run and led 11-2 at halftime.
The Pilgrim offense came alive early in the second half as NEC outscored the Chargers 3-1 over the opening six minutes cutting the lead to 12-5. That is as close as the Pilgrims would get as the Chargers would use a 5-1 lead extending their advantage to 17-6 late and eventually hold on for the 19-8 victory.
Leading the way for Colby-Sawyer was
Alyssia Janak who finished with four goals and three assists, while teammate
Nicole Lavigne finished with five goals, two assists and 11 draw controls.
Caitlyn Whearty contributed three goals and an assist and
Carly Baker netted two goals and dished out two assists for the Chargers.
NEC's Gabirella Bigos and Jacquelyn Lane each scored three times for the Pilgrims.
Colby-Sawyer finished the game out shooting NEC 51-21 and held the 25-19 advantage in ground balls and the 20-9 advantage in draw controls.
Picking up the win in net for Colby-Sawyer was
Meghan Castellano who totaled eight saves on the evening. In net for NEC was Mackenzie Meegan who recorded an impressive 19 saves for the Pilgrims.
NEC returns to action on Monday, March 30 when they host non-conference opponent Fitchburg State University. Colby-Sawyer will hit the field again on Saturday, March 28 when they host conference foe Husson University.
