NEW LONDON, N.H. – February 24, 2015 – Colby-Sawyer freshman
Amanda Calvo (South Deerfield, Mass.) scored a career-high 23 points to lift the fourth seed Chargers women's basketball team to a 62-58 victory over the fifth seed University of Maine-Farmington in the North Atlantic Conference (NAC) tournament first round.
Colby-Sawyer improves to 16-10 and will play at top seed Castleton on Friday evening at 6:00 p.m. in the NAC semifinals. The other semifinal game will feature second seed Husson versus third seed New England College. That game also will be played at Castleton at 8:00 p.m. The winners of each game will square off on Saturday at 2:00 p.m. for the NAC championship. The Beavers end the season with an 11-15 record.
Trailing 55-52 with 4:22 to play, Calvo nailed one of her five three-pointers to tie the game for the sixth time. On the next Beavers possession, Calvo forced a turnover and eventually made a layup to give the Chargers a 57-55 lead. Three straight free throws from UMF regained the lead for the visitors, 58-57.
Colby-Sawyer held the Beavers scoreless in the final two minutes, while junior
Katie McCarthy (Mansfield, Mass.) made three of four free throws and senior
Kelsey Cahill (Cumberland, R.I.) connected on a lay-in to secure the 62-58 victory.
Amanda Calvo tied her career-high in the first half with 15 points and finished with 23 on 9-of-15 shooting in 21 minutes off the bench. Junior
Jessica Shenkel (Sharon, Mass.) added 12 points.
Kelsey Cahill contributed eight points and 11 rebounds. She is now tied for third all-time in career rebounds with 877 with Terri Duffy '10.
Junior Meghan Smith (Boothbay, Maine) had a monster game for UMF. She finished with 15 points and a game-high 17 rebounds. Junior Elizabeth Ferry (Winslow, Maine) nearly had a double-double with 12 points and nine boards.
UMF won the battle of the boards 52-41, but Colby-Sawyer made ten three-pointers while the Beavers hit three.
