Field Hockey Earns Crucial 3-2 Win at Castleton

CASTLETON, Vt. – October 9, 2015 - The Colby-Sawyer field hockey team earned an important 3-2 North Atlantic Conference (NAC) victory over Castleton on Friday evening at Spartan Stadium.

Colby-Sawyer moves to 7-6 overall, tying last year's program record win total, and defeated the Spartans for the first time in five tries since 2011 to move to 1-2 in the NAC. The Chargers are off for a week before hosting the University of Maine-Farmington next Saturday (Oct. 17) at 1 p.m. The loss moves the Spartans to 4-7 on the season, with a 1-2 record in NAC play.

The Chargers got on the board first when Jordan Teixeira found the back of the cage on a pass from Allyse Mullen right in front of the goal to give the Chargers a 1-0 lead. The Spartans would answer right back with a goal of their own when Sarah Wells one-timed a pass from Haley Spittle past the Colby-Sawyer goalie to draw the game even at 1-1.

Coming out of halftime tied at one goal apiece, Colby-Sawyer came out firing and took a 2-1 lead just 27 seconds into the half. Brittany Grandbois collected a rebound right in front of the cage and drove it home for the lead. Grandbois moved into third on Colby-Sawyer's all-time points list with 25 and goals list with 10.

The Chargers would extend the lead to two goals less than two minutes later, when Jordan Teixeira notched her second score of the game, ripping a shot past the Spartan goalie into the bottom-left corner of the goal.

Caslteton would not go away, as Wells got out on a fast break and slid a shot just inside the right post to bring the game back to 3-2 with just under 14 minutes remaining.

With time winding down, the Spartans put the pressure on in the shooting circle, but Colby-Sawyer cleared the ball from harms way each time to bring the game to a close.

In goal for Castleton, Meeghan Doris made 11 saves on 14 shots. For Colby-Sawyer, Jodi Dumayne stopped 10 of the 12 shots she faced on the evening.

Shots were nearly even for the two teams in the contest, with Colby-Sawyer narrowly edging out Castleton, 21-20. The Spartans took nine penalty corners to the Chargers' six in the contest.
