NEW LONDON, N.H. – October 17, 2015 – The University of Maine at Farmington scored four first half goals and went on to defeat Colby-Sawyer 6-3 in North Atlantic Conference (NAC) field hockey action on Saturday afternoon.
UMF improves to 8-3 overall and 3-1 in the conference. The Beavers will travel to Saint Joseph's (Maine) on Tuesday for a non-conference game at 3 p.m. Colby-Sawyer evens its record at 7-7 overall and dips to 1-3 in the NAC. The Chargers will host New England College next Saturday.
The visitors received goals from Lindsey Whitney (Lisbon Falls, Maine) and Emma Spahr (Winthrop, Maine) in the first 15 minutes of the contest to take a 2-0 lead.
The Chargers cut the deficit in half 38 seconds after falling behind 2-0. Sophomore
Paige Viens (Middlebury, Vt.) scored off a feed from freshman
Jordan Teixeira (Exeter, N.H.) at 15:27.
Less than a minute later, Spahr gave the Beavers another two goal lead with her eighth tally of the season.
Teixeira pulled the Chargers within one at the 31 minute mark with her seventh goal of the year.
UMF was able to add one more goal before the half off the stick of Andrea Stemm (Gorham, Maine) to take a 4-2 lead into the break.
Spahr and Whitney began the second half like they did the first with a pair of unanswered goals to increase the Beavers' lead to 6-2.
Colby-Sawyer got one goal back with 16 minutes to play when freshman
Sierra Schuster (Hopkinton, N.H.) fed Teixeira who found the back of the cage for her team leading eighth goal of the season.
Patty Smith (Gorham, Maine) earned the win with four saves in goal for UMF.
UMF held advantages of 8-3 in penalty corners and 16-9 in shots.
