Women's Soccer Defeats UMass Boston 2-0 for First Win over the Beacons

NEW LONDON, N.H. – October 14, 2015 – The Colby-Sawyer College women's soccer team scored a goal in each half to defeat UMass Boston 2-0 on cloudy Wednesday afternoon at Kelsey Field. Colby-Sawyer earns its first win over the Beacons in four tries.

Colby-Sawyer improves to 9-2-2 and has won seven in a row. The Chargers resume North Atlantic Conference (NAC) play on Saturday with a 1 p.m. home contest against Green Mountain. UMass Boston drops its third straight and falls to 4-9-1. The Beacons will resume Little East Conference action on Saturday with their final home match of the regular season against Western Connecticut at 3 p.m.

The Chargers were awarded a corner kick in the 11th minute of action after a ball deflected off of a UMass Boston defender and rolled through the end line. Senior Dominique Papa (Farmington, Conn.) took the kick and sent a bending ball towards the goal that tipped off the Beacons goalie and into the back of the net for her fourth tally of the season.

Colby-Sawyer had a great chance to increase the lead late in the first half on another corner kick. Papa sent a ball into the box that was headed by freshman Abbie Sansoucy (Douglas, Mass.). The ball looked like it would find the corner of the net, but freshman goalie Alyssa Fugiel (Easthampton, Mass.) made a spectacular diving save to keep the match at 1-0.

The Chargers added an insurance goal with less than four minutes remaining in the half. A UMass Boston foul gave Colby-Sawyer a free kick near the side line which was taken by Sansoucy. She sent the ball to the far post where junior Maura Kane (Derry, N.H.) headed the ball past the keeper for her second tally of the season.

Senior Karley Hamilton (Bradford, Vt.) made five saves to earn her seventh shutout of the season. Fugiel had an impressive 10 stops for the Beacons.

The Chargers outshot UMass Boston 21-11 and had an 8-4 advantage on corner kicks.
