NEW LONDON, N.H. – January 16, 2015 – The Colby-Sawyer College women's basketball team fell to Husson, 63-58 in North Atlantic Conference (NAC) action on Friday evening.
Husson improves to 8-4 overall and 6-1 in the NAC. The Eagles will travel down I-89 tomorrow for a 1:00 p.m. game at New England College. Colby-Sawyer drops to 7-6 overall and 4-3 in the conference. The Chargers host Maine Maritime tomorrow at 1:00 p.m.
Chandler Guerrette (Presque Isle, ME) scored a game-high 19 points to lead the Eagles. Samira Cruz (Orlando, Fla.) finished with 11 points and five assists while Denae Johnson (Bangor, ME) added four points and a team-high nine rebounds for Husson.
The Chargers were led by senior
Kelsey Cahill (Cumberland, R.I.). She recorded her fifth double-double of the season with 18 points and a game best 15 rebounds. Cahill moved into sixth on the career rebounding list with 790. Junior
Jessica Shenkel (Sharon, Mass.) added 16 points, which included 8-of-9 from the free throw line. Sophomore
Lexi Iannone (North Haven, Conn.) reached double figures with 12 points. Sophomore
Kristin Ellis (South Easton, Mass.) added 12 rebounds.
The Eagles led throughout the first half and held the Colby-Sawyer shooters to 17.6 percent from the floor. Husson also turned 11 Charger miscues into 10 points. Guerrette scored 12 of her 19 points in the frame. The Chargers controlled the boards in the first with a 31-19 edge, but only mustered five second chance points.
Trailing 32-24 at the break, Colby-Sawyer was able to close within five points on a couple of occasions early in the second but could not break through. Husson closed the rebounding gap with a 22-17 advantage in the second 20 minutes and held on for the 63-58 victory.
Husson shot 40.4 percent for the game and held Colby-Sawyer to 26.6 percent from the floor.
