Women's Basketball Edges Husson, 56-49

Box Score NEW LONDON, N.H. – February 8, 2014 – The Colby-Sawyer women's basketball team defeated Husson 56-49 in North Atlantic Conference (NAC) action on Saturday afternoon.

Colby-Sawyer improves to 12-9 overall and sits in second place in the NAC with a record of 11-3. The Chargers travel to Castleton on Wednesday for a 5:30 p.m. tip. Husson drops to 10-11 overall and 9-5 in conference play. The Eagles host Lyndon on Friday at 5:30 p.m.

Colby-Sawyer junior Kelsey Cahill (Cumberland, R.I.) led all players with a season-high 19 points. She added nine rebounds, four steals and three blocks. Senior Mari Meserve (Carver, Mass.) grabbed a game-high 10 rebounds. Sophomore Katie McCarthy (Mansfield, Mass.) was the second Charger to reach double figures with 10 points.

Husson was led by a 13-point effort from freshman Chandler Guerette (Presque Isle, Maine). Junior Samira Cruz (Orlando, Fla.) scored 12 points and pulled down six boards. Sophomore Victoria McIntyre (Mars Hill, Maine) contributed six points, a team-high eight rebounds, and three blocks.

The first half featured four ties and four lead changes. The Chargers held its largest advantage of the half at 16-9 with 7:26 remaining. Husson rallied to pull within one after six straight points from sophomore Amanda Johnson (Skowhegan, Maine). The teams traded hoops for the next several minutes, before the Chargers used an 8-0 spurt capped by a Kelsey Bragdon (Wells, Maine) layup to take a 28-21 lead. Husson's Guerette made a pair of free throws to pull the visitors within five at the half 28-23. Colby-Sawyer held a 10-0 edge in points off turnovers.

The Chargers did not relinquish the lead for the rest of the game despite Husson coming within a point on multiple occasions in the second half.

Although Colby-Sawyer did not shoot well from the floor, they made 20 free throws to Husson's nine.
