NEW LONDON, N.H. – November 5, 2014 – Sophomore
Rachel Quaye (Westminster, Mass.) broke a scoreless tie in the late stages of the first half to lift the Colby-Sawyer College women's soccer team to a 1-0 victory over intrastate rival New England College in the North Atlantic Conference (NAC) semifinals.
Colby-Sawyer (12-5-1) pushes its win streak to 10 and will play Castleton in the championship match for the third straight season. The Spartans defeated Husson in today's other semifinal contest. The championship match is slated for a 2:00 p.m. start at Kelsey Field on Saturday. New England College drops to 12-6-3 and will wait to see if they have earned a bid to the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) tournament.
Rachel Quaye scored her seventh goal of the season at 38:59, which proved to be the lone goal of the contest. Senior
Michelle Upham (Chelsea, Vt.) played a give and go with Quaye down the right side of the field. Quaye made her move towards goal, as the Pilgrim keeper came out to challenge the play, and was able to flick the ball into the lower right corner of the net.
Two minutes prior to Quaye's goal, the Pilgrims thought they had taken the 1-0 lead, but the play was called back on an offside.
The match was evenly played throughout with Colby-Sawyer holding a slight edge in shots 11-8. Each team took five corner kicks, while NEC keeper Tricia Sardagnola (Shrewsbury, Mass.) and Charger keeper
Karley Hamilton (Bradford, Vt.) had five saves apiece. For Hamilton, she recorded her eighth shutout of the season.
