JWU Downs Field Hockey, 4-2

NEW LONDON, N.H. – October 12, 2014 – The Colby-Sawyer field hockey team fell to the visiting Wildcats of Johnson & Wales, 4-2 at the Sally Shaw Veitch Turf Field on Sunday afternoon.

The Chargers (7-7) resume North Atlantic Conference (NAC) action next Saturday with a 5:30 p.m. start at Husson. Johnson & Wales (8-5) travels to Becker on Wednesday for a 4:30 p.m. contest with the Hawks.

The Chargers jumped in front 4:45 into the first half as freshman Jesse Murch (Waterford, Maine) deflected the ball into the back of the cage off a shot from sophomore Allyse Mullen (Wilder, Vt.).

Johnson & Wales scored the next two goals of the half to take a 2-1 advantage into the break. Freshman Giovanna Ciarvardoni (Latham, N.Y.) scored her team leading 10th and 11th goals for the Wildcats. Her first goal came at 6:48 when she ripped a shot that ricocheted off a defenders stick and snuck in just under the top of the cage. The go ahead goal came at 21:14 off a penalty corner. Freshman Shaina Thompson (Delmar, Del.) inserted the corner, which was then stopped by senior Courtney McTague (Saugus, Mass.). Ciarvardoni then fired a shot into the back of the cage.

After a scoreless first 28 minutes of the second half, the Wildcats found an offensive flow and converted on a pair of goals in a span of 1:29. McTague was responsible for both goals, scoring her seventh and eighth of the season. Her first came with 6:28 remaining as she fired the ball into the left corner of the goal. She then scored with 4:59 left to play to give JWU a 4-1 lead.

Senior Nykki Stritzinger (Bel Air, Md.) added her team leading seventh goal for Colby-Sawyer with 39 seconds remaining, but it was not enough as the Wildcats took the 4-2 victory.

Freshman Shannon Yodder (Boyertown, Pa.) made five saves in the win for JWU. Junior Jodi Dumayne (Claremont, N.H.) had nine saves for Colby-Sawyer.
