BOSTON, Mass. - October 11, 2014 - The Colby-Sawyer College women's volleyball team split a pair of matches on the final day of the Beacon Invitational hosted by UMass Boston. The Chargers began the day with a 3-1 triumph over Emerson College, but then fell 3-2 to the host Beacons.
Colby-Sawyer 3, Emerson 1The Chargers dropped the first set, but then took the next three in convincing fashion to defeat the Lions 3-1.
Jackie Keating led all players with 16 kills. She added 20 digs and four blocks.
Stephanie Vecchio also recorded a double-double with 13 kills and 12 digs. She also added a match best three aces.
Laura Smolinski was the third Charger to have a double-double with a match-high 42 assists and 15 digs.
Leah Drolet hit a team best .368, which resulted in nine kills.
Lexi Strong collected a team best 21 digs.
Sarah Hannon was the fifth Colby-Sawyer player with double figure digs with 11.
UMass Boston 3, Colby-Sawyer 2The Chargers pushed UMass Boston, a team that was receiveing votes in the latest AVCA Division III Top 25 poll, to five sets in the night cap. After dropping the first two sets 25-13 and 25-18, the Chargers fought back with strong performances in the final three sets. Colby-Sawyer edged the Beacons 26-24 in the third and 25-20 to force a fifth. The set was tied at 13-13, but the home team was able to come away with the next two points and the victory.The match was the first five-set match of the season for the Chargers.
Jackie Keating continued her great weekened with 14 kills and 11 digs.
Gabrielle Rodriguez added eight kills, while
Stephanie Vecchio contributed seven kills and seven digs.
Laura Smolinski had 29 assists, seven digs and three aces.
Lexi Strong turned in a solid defensive effort against a powerful hitting UMass Boston squad. She had 19 digs.
