NEW LONDON, N.H. – September 21, 2013 - The Colby-Sawyer women's tennis team defeated Johnson State 8-1 at Kelsey Courts on Saturday afternoon. The match was the North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) East Division season opener for the Chargers.
The Chargers improve to 3-4 overall and 1-0 in NEAC East play, while Johnson State falls to 1-5 overall and 0-2 in conference action.
Colby-Sawyer began the afternoon by sweeping doubles play. Senior
Elizabeth Lincoln (Plymouth, Mass.) and sophomore
Ashlyn Ramsay (Barkhamsted, Conn.) breezed to an 8-1 win over sophomore Deanna Brandsetter (Newport, Vt.) and sophomore Annette Kaminski (Southington, Conn.) at No. 1 doubles.
The Colby-Sawyer No. 2 doubles duo of sophomore
Charlotte Horton (South Hamilton, Mass.) and junior
Oxana Tkachenko (Lviv, Ukraine) defeated senior Maegan Ploof (St. Albans, Vt.) and junior Kate Murphy (Westfield, Vt.), 8-0.
The No. 3 doubles team of freshman
Conley Dion (Falmouth, Maine) and junior
Ellen Graham (Newburyport, Mass.) gave the Chargers a 3-0 lead after an 8-1 win over senior Clarisse Talley (Morrisville, Vt.) and sophomore Eden Towers (Morrisville, Vt.).
Lincoln won 6-0, 6-0 at the top flight over Brandsetter. Ramsay, Horton, Tkachenko each won 6-1, 6-0 at the No. 2, No. 3, and No. 4 spots, respectively.
Dion picked up a 6-1, 6-2 win over Towers in the No. 5 slot to give the Chargers an 8-0 lead.
The Badgers came away with a point in the final match of the afternoon at No. 6 singles. Clarisse Talley defeated freshman
Ziyoda Saidova (Osh, Kyrgyzstan), 6-1, 6-3.
The Chargers host Thomas tomorrow morning at 11:00 a.m., while the Badgers play at Plymouth tomorrow at noon.
