NEW LONDON, N.H. – September 11, 2013 - The Colby-Sawyer women's tennis team cruised to an 8-1 win over Plymouth State at Kelsey Courts on Wednesday afternoon.
The Chargers even their record to 2-2, while the Panthers go to 1-1.
Colby-Sawyer began the afternoon by sweeping doubles play. Senior
Elizabeth Lincoln (Plymouth, Mass.) and sophomore
Ashlyn Ramsay (Barkhamsted, Conn.) breezed to an 8-0 win over senior Molly Heartfield (Dorset, Vt.) and sophomore Nitsa Ioannides (El Cajon, Calif.) at No. 1 doubles.
The Colby-Sawyer No. 2 doubles duo of sophomore
Charlotte Horton (South Hamilton, Mass.) and junior
Oxana Tkachenko (Lviv, Ukraine) defeated senior Jane Duggan (Saunderstown, R.I.) and freshman Nikki Lund (Hingham, Mass.), 8-2.
The No. 3 doubles team of freshman
Conley Dion (Falmouth, Maine) and junior
Ellen Graham (Newburyport, Mass.) gave the Chargers a 3-0 lead after an 8-6 win over senior Chelsea Thibeault (Manchester, N.H.) and sophomore Peyton Smith (Stuttgart, Germany).
Lincoln did not drop a game en route to a 6-0, 6-0 win at the top flight. Ramsay also won in straight sets 6-2, 6-1 in the No. 2 spot.
Horton and Tkachenko won their No. 3 and No. 4 singles matches, respectively, in straight sets.
In the match of the evening, Colby-Sawyer's
Ellen Graham battled back from a 6-0 loss in the first set to defeat Thibeault 6-4 and 10-4 in the second and third sets for the win in the fifth slot.
The Panthers' lone point came at No. 6 singles where freshman Rachel Gustafson (Belchertown, Mass.) handed Dion a 6-1, 6-0 loss.
The Chargers play at the Grass Court Doubles Tournament in Newport, R.I., hosted by Salve Regina on Saturday. Plymouth travels to Castleton next Wednesday for a 4:00 p.m. match.
