Plymouth Escapes with 3-2 Win at Colby-Sawyer

NEW LONDON, N.H. – September 25, 2012 – The Plymouth State University women's volleyball team let a 2-0 lead slip away, but rallied for a 15-12 win in the fifth set to secure a 3-2 victory at Colby-Sawyer on Tuesday evening.

Plymouth, who won by scores of 25-16, 25-18, 19-25, 21-25 and 15-12, improves to 6-8 on the season, while Colby-Sawyer dips to 5-8.

Senior Casey Stoodley (Salem, N.H.) eclipsed the 1000 kill plateau in just her third year at Plymouth. She finished the match with 17 to give her 1008 for her career. Stoodley added a match best 26 digs and seven aces.

Senior Elissa Morin (Nashua, N.H.) added 11 kills, while junior Kaitlyn Tedeschi (Pascoag, R.I.) chipped in nine. Freshman setter Kirsten Perrotta (Hudson, N.H.) collected a match-high 41 assists to go along with nine digs and six kills.

The Chargers were led by a 15-kill performance from junior Courtney O'Hara (Mystic, Conn.). She added 12 digs for her fifth double-double of the season. Sophomore Jackie Keating (Marshfield, Mass.) had nine kills and 11 digs. Sophomore Stephanie Vecchio (Shelter Island, N.Y.) had a match-high five blocks. Freshman setter Laura Smolinski (Hebron, Conn.) contributed a double-double of 32 assists and 12 digs.

The first set featured six ties, before Plymouth separated themselves with a 7-2 run to win by a nine point margin.

The Panthers jumped out to an 11-1 run in set two, but the Chargers clawed their way back to cut the deficit to three at 19-16. Plymouth won the set after a 6-2 run.

Colby-Sawyer forced a fourth game after securing a 25-19 win in the third set, which ended on a 5-0 run.

The fourth set was back and forth with no team gaining an advantage larger than four points. Leading by one at 22-21, the Chargers were able to stay alive in the match with a pair of kills and a Plymouth attack error.

The fifth set contained six ties and four lead changes. With the set tied at 11-11, Colby-Sawyer had two errors and Plymouth added a pair of kills to win the match. 

Colby-Sawyer will host Rivier on Thursday night at 7:00 pm. Plymouth travels to Providence, R.I. this weekend to play four matches at the Johnson & Wales Fall Classic.
