Field Hockey Wins Home Opener over Becker, 3-1

NEW LONDON, N.H. – September 2, 2012 - The Colby-Sawyer field hockey team scored three first half goals en route to a 3-1 victory over the visiting Hawks of Becker College on Sunday afternoon. The Chargers even their record to 1-1, while Becker dips to 0-1. 

Colby-Sawyer sophomore Katharine Kessler (Newport, N.H.) got the scoring started in the ninth minute when she maneuvered through traffic to tally her first goal of the season.

Seven minutes later, Kessler put the home team up 2-0 as she found the back of the cage.

The Chargers increased the advantage to 3-0 in the 28th minute on freshman Taylor O'Connor's (Sanbornton, N.H.) goal. O'Connor beat the Becker goalie to the lower left corner of the cage to record a goal for the second straight game.

Becker was able to get a goal back in the 69th minute to cut the deficit to 3-1, but the Chargers held on for the victory. Senior Brooke Cote (Fitchburg, Mass.) took a feed from junior Michelle Griczika (Barre, Mass.) and sent the ball into the back of the cage.

Colby-Sawyer freshman goalie Jodi Dumayne (Claremont, N.H.) worked the first half and made three saves, while freshman teammate Kasey Redmond (Germantown, N.Y.) played the final 35 minutes and recorded one save. Becker junior goalie Samantha Dikes (Little Falls, N.J.) allowed three goals and saved 13 shots in the loss.

The Chargers will host Endicott on Saturday, September 8 at 1:00 pm. Becker travels to Fitchburg on Wednesday, September 5 for a 4:00 pm contest.
