PLYMOUTH, N.H. – September 17, 2012 - The Colby-Sawyer College women's tennis team won three close doubles matches and four out of six in singles Monday afternoon en route to a 7-2 victory over Plymouth State University in a non-conference match at the PE Center Courts.

The match was closer than reflected by the score.  The doubles scores were 8-6, 8-5 and 8-5, and three of the six singles matches went to a third set.  The visiting Chargers, who lost a 6-3 match to the Panthers last season, improved their team record to 6-2 this year, while PSU fell to 2-4.

Junior Liz Lincoln (Plymouth, Mass.) and senior Claire Toffey (Barnstable, Mass.) led the Chargers with two wins each.  They teamed up for an 8-6 victory at No. 1 doubles and then took singles matches at No. 1 and No. 3, respectively.  Lincoln needed a third set to defeat PSU's top player, senior Sara Burke (Barrington, R.I.), 6-1, 3-6, 6-2.

Sophomore Oxana Tkachenko (Lviv, Ukraine) and junior Kathleen Rogers (Falls Village, Conn.) also won twice each for the visitors, Tkachenko in three sets at No. 4 singles and at No. 3 doubles with freshman Charlotte Horton (South Hamilton, Mass.), and Rogers in straight sets at No. 6 singles and at No. 2 doubles with sophomore Donna Gordon (Essex Jct., Vt.).

PSU juniors Molly Heartfield (Dorset, Vt.) and Chelsea Thibeault (Manchester, N.H./Central) collected victories for the home team.  Heartfield rallied from a set down to pull out a three-set victory at No. 2 singles, and Thibeault was a straight-set winner at No. 5 singles.

Plymouth State is back on the court Thursday with a non-conference clash at Lyndon State College.  Colby-Sawyer plays again Tuesday at Curry College.
