Colby-Sawyer Falls to #17 SUNY Cortland 3-0 in NCAA First Round

POTSDAM, N.Y. – November 9, 2012 – The Colby-Sawyer College women's volleyball team fell to #17 SUNY Cortland 3-0 in Friday's NCAA Division III Women's Volleyball First Round hosted by Clarkson University.

SUNY Cortland won by scores of 25-19, 25-13, and 25-12.

The Red Dragons (34-5), who made an appearance in last year's national quarterfinals, improve to 34-5 and will play New Paltz tomorrow afternoon. Colby-Sawyer, who appeared in its second straight NCAA Tournament and fifth overall, ends its season at 18-14.

The Chargers played the 17th ranked team in the nation very closely in the first set and held a lead on a couple of occasions, but the Red Dragons turned up the offense and finished off the set with five straight points. SUNY Cortland continued to pour on the pressure in the second and third sets to take the 3-0 sweep. The Red Dragons hit .400 for the match. 

Colby-Sawyer was led by junior Courtney O'Hara (Mystic, Conn.). She hit .545 and had a team best seven kills. Junior Emilee McBride (Strafford, N.H.) and sophomores Jackie Keating (Marshfield, Mass.) and Stephanie Vecchio (Shelter Island, N.Y.) each added six kills. Freshman Laura Smolinski (Hebron, Conn.) recorded a double-double of 24 assists and 10 digs. Junior Ally Le-Bruno (Medfield, Mass.) led the team with 11 digs.

The Red Dragons received a match-high 14 kills from Ava Hintz, while Ashley Coyle chipped in 10 kills and 10 digs. Kristen Guercio tallied 32 assists.
