NEW LONDON, N.H. – October 20, 2012 – The Colby-Sawyer College women's volleyball team won both of its matches on Saturday to complete a perfect 7-0 season in the North Atlantic Conference (NAC).
Colby-Sawyer earned 3-0 sweeps over Green Mountain and Castleton and improved to 14-13 overall. Green Mountain split a pair of matches, losing to Colby-Sawyer and defeating Maine-Farmington 3-2. The Eagles go to 7-13 overall and 4-3 in conference play. Castleton also split today with a 3-0 win over Maine-Farmington and a loss to Colby-Sawyer. Their record goes to 8-10 overall and 4-3 in the NAC. UMF lost both of its matches and drops to 5-16 overall and 2-5 in conference action.
Colby-Sawyer 3, Green Mountain 0 – 25-8, 25-13, 25-5
The Chargers hit .369 as a team in a 3-0 victory over Green Mountain. Junior
Courtney O'Hara (Mystic, Conn.) had a match best 10 kills. Sophomore
Stephanie Vecchio (Shelter Island, N.Y.) hit .636 en route to seven kills. Freshman setter
Laura Smolinski (Hebron, Conn.) collected 27 assists.
Sophomore Madison Wage (Cheshire, Conn.) and freshman Hayley Provost (Tolland, Conn.) each had a pair of kills for the Eagles.
Colby-Sawyer 3, Castleton 0 – 25-5, 25-10, 25-10
Colby-Sawyer came away with a 3-0 win over Castleton in the day's second match.
Stephanie Vecchio (Shelter Island, N.Y.) had another solid match with 13 kills on .500 hitting. Sophomore
Jackie Keating (Marshfield, Mass.) was equally impressive with 12 kills on .458 hitting. Freshman setter
Laura Smolinski (Hebron, Conn.) registered a match best 39 assists. Freshman
Kelsey McCulley (Southampton, N.Y.) hit an impressive .556 and had six kills. Freshman teammate
Jenn Mailhiot (Douglas, Mass.) chipped in four kills on six attempts, while freshman
Kelsey Sullivan (Laconia, N.H.) hit .364 with five kills.
The Spartans received four kills from senior Nicole Valastro (Glens Falls, N.Y.) and freshman Maggie Smith (Holden, Mass.). Valastro added 10 digs, while freshman Amanda Chambers (Lake George, N.Y.) tallied a match-high 13 digs.
Castleton 3, Maine-Farmington 0 – 25-18, 25-21, 25-23
The Spartans earned a 3-0 win over the Beavers. Senior Nicole Valastro (Glens Falls, N.Y.) led the team with 16 digs and added eight kills. Junior Grace Schreiber (Cheshire, Conn.) contributed a team-high nine kills in the win. Freshman Shelby Smyth (Chelmsford, Mass.) had three service aces and finished just a dig shy of a double-double with 10 assists and nine digs. Classmate Amanda Chambers (Lake George, N.Y.) added nine digs, and recorded six kills.
UMF was led by freshman Julia Christie (Lamoine, Maine). She recorded eight kills and 10 digs. Junior Jen Vadnais (Arundel, Maine) added seven kills, nine digs, and three aces. Senior setter Whitney Walls (Bar Harbor, Maine) had a match best 20 assists.
Green Mountain 3, Maine-Farmington 2 – 18-25, 10-25, 25-17, 25-15, 15-12
After falling in the first two sets, the Eagles stormed back and won the next three for an important win in the NAC standings. The Eagles improve to 7-13 overall and 4-3 in NAC play, while the Beavers dip to 5-16 overall and 2-5 in the conference.
Junior Kara Egan (Breezy Point, N.Y.) led all players with 15 kills in the win. She added a match best 13 digs for the double-double and seven aces. Sophomore Madison Wage (Cheshire, Conn.) added seven kills and 10 digs, while freshman Megan Roy (Franklin, Mass.) contributed six kills and 11 digs. Junior setter Jennifer Seredejko (Greenfield, Mass.) collected 26 assists and eight digs.
The Beavers were led by a 13-kill performance from junior Nicole Osborne (Calais, Maine.) She hit a team best .320. Junior Jen Vadnais (Arundel, Maine) recorded nine kills and nine digs. Freshman Julia Christie (Lamoine, Maine) added eight kills and team best 10 digs. Senior setter Whitney Walls (Bar Harbor, Maine) had a match-high 28 assists.
