AMHERST, Mass. - May 14, 2010 - The Colby-Sawyer women's tennis team was defeated by Simmons College, 5-0 in the first round of the 2010 NCAA Tournament on Friday. After a morning of rain showers, the match was moved in doors to the Hampshire College Bay Road Tennis Club.
The Sharks advance to play the top overall seed Amherst College on Saturday, while the Chargers end their season with a record of 17-6.
Simmons, which earned a 7-2 win over Colby-Sawyer during the regular season, got off to a strong start by sweeping doubles play. Katy Hallinan and Jordan Borash were the first to give Simmons a point, earning an 8-1 win over
Carolyn Drake and
Brittany Mailman at No. 3. In the No. 2 pairing, Melissa Keroack and Maggie Taylor defeated
Claire Toffey and
Lauren Turenne, 8-5.
The top Colby-Sawyer pair of
Jen LaChance and
Hannah White held a 6-5 lead over Maile Macleod and Sabrina Salmela, but the Simmons duo stormed back to win the next three games for an 8-6 win that wrapped up doubles action.
Simmons took a 4-0 lead after the first singles match was wrapped up. Maggie Taylor picked up a 6-1, 6-2 win over
Lauren Turenne in straight sets, putting the Sharks on the verge of victory. Shortly after, Simmons clinched the win as Katy Hallinan closed out a 6-4, 6-0 win against
Claire Toffey at number three.
