NEW LONDON, N.H. – November 20, 2010 – The Colby-Sawyer women's basketball team defeated Westfield State, 57-50 in Saturday's Colby-Sawyer Tip-Off Tournament championship game. In the consolation game, Suffolk earned a 68-63 victory over Clarkson.
Colby-Sawyer improves to 3-0, Westfield moves to 3-1, Suffolk improves to 1-2 and Clarkson falls to 1-2 after this weekend's action.
CHAMPIONSHIP GAME –Colby-Sawyer 57, Westfield 50 - BOX SCORE
The first half between the Chargers and Owls was all about runs. Westfield began the contest on a 9-2 run, including seven points from senior Cassy Jouannet (Conway, Mass.). Colby-Sawyer responded with a 19-0 run thanks to four three pointers to take a 21-9 lead. The Owls came right back with a 10-0 run of their own to cut the deficit to 21-19 with just under three minutes to play in the first. Westfield held the Chargers to one made field goal in the last nine minutes of the first frame, but trailed the home team 25-23 at the break.
The second half was the opposite of the first as each team traded hoops for the first 15 minutes with the largest lead for either side being five points. Colby-Sawyer led by four with five minutes to play when they received a pair of treys from senior
Katelyn Stravinsky (Norwell, Mass.) and sophomore
Taylor DeSanty (North Adams, Mass.) to increase the advantage to 57-47. Jouannet added a bucket and senior Ashley Finnegan (Worcester, Mass.) knocked down a free throw to cut the game to 57-50, but the contest ended with the same score.
The Owls held a 26-16 advantage in the paint, but Colby-Sawyer made nine three-pointers and Westfield went 0-15 from beyond the arc.
Westfield's Jouannet led all players with 25 points. Finnegan added her second double-double of the tournament with 14 points and a game-high 13 rebounds.
Colby-Sawyer was led by 16 points from tournament MVP,
Taylor DeSanty. Stravinsky recorded 11 points, four blocks and four steals. Junior
Kaitlin Fifield (Warner, N.H.) had six points and a career-high 12 boards. Sophomore
Cailin Bullett (Millbury, Mass.) filled the box score again with eight points, six rebounds and a game best seven assists.
CONSOLATION GAME –Suffolk 68, Clarkson 63 - BOX SCORE
Suffolk (1-2) controlled the first half of the game after shooting 41.2% and held Clarkson(1-2) to 30.8% from the field. Junior Mary Garon (Auburn, N.H.) paced the Rams in the first with 10 points and five boards.
Suffolk, who led 37-25 at the break, increased their advantage to 17 five minuets into the second. They were comfortably ahead for most of the frame before Clarkson began to rally late. The Golden Knights, behind 50% shooting, climbed back to within one possession a couple of times. With 1:10 left in the game, Clarkson pulled within one at 64-63 after a layup by junior Morgan Carella (Roslyn Heights, N.Y.). Suffolk, held to 25% in the second, was able to knock down four free throws late to seal a 68-63 win.
Garon registered a double-double with 14 points and 10 boards in the Suffolk victory. Freshman Jennifer Ruys (Wallingford, Conn.) had a game-high 18 points. Sophomore guard Lindsey Rogers (Gloucester, Mass.) added 12 points, six rebounds and a game-high seven assists.
Clarkson was led by a 12-point, 11-rebound performance from junior Carey Turner (Clifton Park, N.Y.). Senior Lauren Pluchino (Liverpool, N.Y.) was a force in the paint with 11 points, six rebounds and four blocks.
