NEW LONDON, N.H. – November 19, 2010 – The Colby-Sawyer women's basketball team and Westfield State will play at 3:00 pm in Saturday's Colby-Sawyer Tip-Off Tournament championship game after winning Friday evening. The Chargers began the night with an 82-62 victory over Clarkson, while the Owls earned a 52-44 win over Suffolk in the night cap. Clarkson and Suffolk will play in the consolation match at 1:00 pm on Saturday.
Colby-Sawyer improves to 2-0, Westfield moves to 3-0, Clarkson pulls even at 1-1, and Suffolk drops to 0-2 on the season.
GAME 1 – Colby-Sawyer 82, Clarkson 62 - BOX SCORE
Junior Chrissy Scanlon (Queensbury, N.Y.) scored the first eight points of the game as Clarkson held an 11-2 edge over Colby-Sawyer three minutes into the game. The Golden Knights remained in front for the first nine minutes until a layup by junior
Kaitlin Fifield (Warner, N.H.) gave Colby-Sawyer a 16-15 lead. The teams traded hoops for the next five minutes before the Chargers ended the half on a 16-4 run to lead 38-25 at the break.
Colby-Sawyer stayed in control in the second half and led as many as 23. Sophomore
Taylor DeSanty (North Adams, Mass.) led the Chargers with 17 points, while senior
Katelyn Stravinsky (Norwell, Mass.) chipped in 13. Sophomore
Cailin Bullett (Millbury, Mass.) had eight points and eight assists, while Fifield just missed a double-double with 13 points and nine rebounds. Freshman
Mari Meserve (Carver, Mass.) was dominant on the glass and hauled in 18 boards. The 18 rebounds ties for the seventh most in a single game in Colby-Sawyer history.
Clarkson was led by Scanlon's double-double of a game-high 21 points and 10 rebounds. Senior Lauren Pluchino (Liverpool, N.Y.) added 13 points, including 3-3 from beyond the arc and six rebounds.
GAME 2 – Westfield 52, Suffolk 44 - BOX SCORE
The first half was tightly played by both sides with the biggest lead being four points in the first 18 minutes. Westfield, who trailed 19-16, ended the half with a 10-0 run to lead 26-19 at the break. The Owls maintained their edge throughout the second half and led as much as 13 midway through the frame.
Westfield held a 19-7 advantage in bench points with 15 of those coming from sophomore Courtney DelRatez (Adams, Mass.). She knocked down five out of seven shots from three point range in 13 minutes. Senior Ashley Finnegan (Worcester, Mass.) had a double-double with 13 points and 11 rebounds. Senior Cassy Jouannet (Conway, Mass.) contributed eight points and 10 boards.
Suffolk was led by a game-high 17 points from freshman Jennifer Ruys (Wallingford, Conn.). Ruys hit nine of 10 free throw attempts. Sophomore Lindsey Rogers (Gloucester, Mass.) tallied six points, a team best nine rebounds, and three assists.
