Volleyball Wins Non-conference tilt with Emerson, 3-1

BOX SCORE

BOSTON, Mass. - October 26, 2010 -
Colby-Sawyer College dropped the first game but then dominated the next three to take a 3-1 victory over Emerson College in non-conference women's volleyball action at Emerson's Brown & Plofker Gym. The Chargers took the match by scores of 20-25, 25-13, 25-16, 25-16.

Emerson held the lead for most of the first game as the Lions held a 12-7 lead. Colby-Sawyer scored the next five points to tie the game on an attack error by Emerson and a four point serving run by Courtney O'Hara (Mystic, Conn.) that included two aces. An attack error gave Emerson a 13-12 lead that started a five point Lion spree. The Chargers managed to pull to within 18-20 on a kill by Emilee McBride (Strafford, N.H.) but Emerson scored the next four points. Kills by O'Hara and Michelle Doody (Franklin, Mass.) narrowed the gap but an Alyssa Thorne (Pittsburgh, Pa.) attack ended the game.

Colby-Sawyer broke out to a 6-0 lead in game two on a block and then five consecutive service points from O'Hara. Emerson closed the gap to 6-9 following a kill by Maddie Breeland (Fairfax, Va.), but the chargers scored the next three points to extend the lead back to six. Emerson twice cut the margin to five points, but a block by Stef Turner (Boxborough, Mass.) and an attack error by Emerson made the score 16-8. The Lions were never able to close the Colby-Sawyer advantage to less than seven the remainder of the match. An Emerson serving error followed by an attack error evened the match.

Game three started similarly as the Chargers bounded out to a 6-1 lead. Kills by Alexa Krakowiak (Westport, Conn.) and Breeland pulled the Lions to within three. A service error for Emerson followed by two Charger service aces by Kristin Sawyer (Walpole, Mass.) started a serving run by Sawyer that expanded the lead to 13-4. Emerson was unable to reduce the margin to less than six points the remainder of the game.

It was more of the same for the Chargers in game four as Colby-Sawyer bolted out to a 10-3 lead. The Chargers gradually increased the lead to 20-9, and finished off the match on a kill by Doody.

Colby-Sawyer was led by Doody with 19 kills, two blocks and a dozen digs. McBride had 10 kills and O'Hara added seven. Kristin Sawyer assisted on 33 successful attacks and served up six aces. Ally Le-Bruno (Medfield, Mass.) led the Chargers with 19 digs.

Krakowiak had nine kills for Emerson with Breeland adding eight. Katie Bailey (Calabasas, Calif.) had 22 assists and Jamie Morgan (Maple Glen, Pa.) made 13 digs.

Emerson (21-9) will travel to Brunswick, Maine this Saturday to play Bowdoin and Keene State colleges. Colby-Sawyer (16-13) will play a tri-match with Regis College and Wentworth on Saturday in Weston, Mass.
