Women's Tennis Wins Regular Season Finale, 6-3

PLYMOUTH, N.H. – October 13, 2010 - The Colby-Sawyer women's tennis team won two doubles and four singles matches Thursday afternoon to post a 6-3 victory over Plymouth State University in a non-conference women's tennis match at the P.E. Center's indoor courts.

The Chargers held a 2-1 advantage after doubles, and took four of the singles matches, including two in three sets. Colby-Sawyer earned its third straight win to improve to 11-4 overall, while PSU fell to 6-5 overall. The match was originally scheduled to be played at Colby-Sawyer but was moved to PSU's indoor courts due to weather.

Colby-Sawyer's top four players were all double winners. Freshman Stephanie Carlsson (Kungsangen, Sweden) topped PSU sophomore Sara Burke (Barrington, R.I.) in an excellent three-set match at No. 1 singles, coming back from down a set, down 5-2 in the third and fighting off a match point against to win 10-8 in the third-set tiebreaker. Carlsson had teamed with senior Carolyn Drake (Great River, N.Y.) for an 8-4 victory at No. 2 doubles, and Drake won in a third set at No. 4 singles to clinch the victory for the Chargers.

Freshman Liz Lincoln (Plymouth, Mass.) and Claire Toffey (Barnstable, Mass.) were straight-set winners for the Chargers at No. 2 and No. 3 singles, respectively, after pairing up for a win at No. 1 doubles.

PSU got its three wins at the bottom of the line-up, with freshman Jane Duggan (Saunderstown, R.I.) winning twice. Freshman Molly Heartfield (Dorset, Vt.) and Duggan won in straight sets at No. 5 and No. 6 singles, respectively, and Duggan teamed with junior Laura Donovan (Acton, Mass.) for PSU's only doubles win at No. 3.

Plymouth State wraps up the regular season this Saturday with a 12 noon Little East Conference match at Western Connecticut State University, with home-court advantage in the first round of next week's conference tournament on the line. Colby-Sawyer plays a Commonwealth Coast Conference Tournament semifinal match next Wednesday at Nichols College (2:00 p.m.)
