BEVERLY, Mass. - October 12, 2010 - The fifth seed Colby-Sawyer Chargers women's tennis team upset the fourth seeded Gulls of Endicott, 5-3 in the opening round of The Commonwealth Coast Conference playoffs on Tuesday. The Chargers advance to face top-ranked Nichols on Wednesday, October 20 at 2:00 pm.
The Chargers defeated the Gulls in last year's TCCC championship match.
Endicott began the day with an 8-0 triumph in number three doubles as juniors Kerri Dunn (Middleton, Mass.) and Laura MacLeod (Mashpee, Mass.) defeated Chargers freshmen
Melanie Corley (North Sutton, N.H.) and
Julia Soleau (Delmar, N.Y.).
Colby-Sawyer took the final two doubles matches, however, to hold a 2-1 advantage going into singles play. The combination of sophomore
Claire Toffey (Barnstable, Mass.) and freshman
Liz Lincoln (Plymouth, Mass.) pulled off an 8-6 win over their Gulls number one singles opponents and senior
Carolyn Drake (Great River, N.Y.) and freshman
Stephanie Carlsson (Kungsangen, Sweden) handed their number three doubles opponents a 8-3 defeat.
In singles play, Lincoln, Toffey and Drake won in straight sets for the Chargers to earn the final three points needed to win by decision. Lincoln won number two singles 6-4, 6-2, Toffey took number two singles 6-1, 6-0, and Drake edged Endicott freshman Melanie Weinick (Colchester, Conn.) in both sets 6-4, 7-5.
Endicott earned a number five and six singles triumphs thanks to sophomores Rachel Fenstermaker (Somerset, Maine) and Ashley Sullivan (Concord, N.H.), neither of whom gave up a point winning 6-0, 6-0.
In the lone singles match to go unfinished, Gulls junior Kate Cioffi (Essex, Vt.) took the first set of number one singles 6-2, but with the second set tied 4-4 with Carlsson the Chargers earned all the points they needed for victory.
