BEVERLY, Mass. – September 22, 2009- In a rematch of the 2008 The Commonwealth Coast Conference women's tennis championship match, Endicott College came away on top again as the Gulls edged Colby-Sawyer College, 5-4, on Tuesday afternoon in Beverly, Mass. The Gulls improve to 6-2 overall and 4-2 in conference matches while the Chargers dropped their first match of the season to fall to 5-1 and 4-1 in the TCCC.
Endicott was able to take two-of-three doubles matches as Kate Cioffi (Essex, Vt.) and Alyson Boehm (Lowell, Mass.) teamed up to defeat Hannah White and Jen LaChance, 8-5, in No. 1 doubles. TCCC Player of the Week Lori Wardner (Wrentham, Mass.) and Nicole Breting (Johnston, R.I.) continued their strong stretch of play as the duo improved to a perfect 8-0 at No. 2 doubles with their 8-2 win over Mary Francis and Brittany Mailman . Colby-Sawyer picked up its first point of the day in No. 3 doubles as Claire Toffey and Lauren Turenne downed Rachel Layton (Falmouth, Maine) and Emily Annis (Hampton, N.H.) by a score of 8-0.
The two teams would combine to split the singles matches, leading to an Endicott victory, following a move indoors as the tennis courts became unplayable due to darkness. Cioffi and Breting were each pushed to three sets with Mary Francis and Jen LaChance with Cioffi coming out on top over Francis, 6-4, 0-6, 6-4, and Breting coming from behind against LaChance to win, 2-6, 6-4, 6-1. Lori Wardner picked up the winning point for Endicott as the senior defeated Hannah White, 7-6 (10-8), 6-0. Colby-Sawyer received singles wins in straight sets from Claire Toffey, Lauren Turenne, and Brittany Mailman at numbers four, five and six singles play, respectively.
Endicott looks to extend its four game winning-streak when the Gulls dip out of conference play on Wednesday to travel to Norton, Mass. for a 4:00 p.m. matchup with Wheaton College. The Chargers return to action on Saturday with a 12:00 p.m. matchup in Boston, Mass. with Wentworth.
