Chargers Dismiss Judges in ECAC First Round

WALTHAM, MASS. - November 11, 2009 - The Colby-Sawyer Chargers defeated the Judges of Brandeis University in five sets to advance to the semifinals of the ECAC tournament. The win marked the first time in eight meetings that the Chargers have bested the Judges. The Chargers were led by junior outside hitter Michelle Doody who had 24 kills and 21 digs and a strong team defensive effort that posted four players in double digit digs including a team high 25 by senior libero Mickey Lapan. Senior setter Genny Moore added to her career record assists with 42.

Colby-Sawyer came out strong and took the first two sets with ease (25-15, 25-16)  before Brandeis rallied back to dominate sets three and four (14-25, 16-25). The Chargers came out fighting in game five and pulled out to a 5-2 lead on two Doody kills and a tip kill by senior middle Kim Shannon.  Brandeis battled back to gain an 8-7 advantage when the teams swapped sides. The Chargers' junior middle Stef Turner took over the last half of the final set by killing five sets on five attempts. The match was sealed for the Chargers on a Shelagh Costello dig and a Doody kill to the back corner for the 15-10 win.
 
The Chargers will travel to Plymouth State to face the Coast Guard Academy on Saturday November 14th at 2:00pm. In the other semifinal, Plymouth State will face Western New England College.
