Volleyball Defeats Norwich, 3-2

NORTHFIELD, Vt. - October 7, 2009 - The Colby-Sawyer women's volleyball team defeated the Cadets of Norwich University in five sets, 3-2 on Wednesday evening. The Chargers won by scores of 20-25, 25-17, 25-9, 18-25 and 15-11.

The win improves the Chargers record to 13-4, while Norwich drops to 11-7.

Junior Michelle Doody (Franklin, Mass.) became just the fourth player in Colby-Sawyer women's volleyball player to eclipse the 1,000 kill plateau. Seniors Megan White (Monroe, Conn.) and Kim Shannon (Wallingford, Conn.) each had 10 kills, while junior Stef Turner (Boxborough, Mass.) hit .296 with 12 kills.

Norwich jumped out to a 13-4 lead in the first set and rode that momentum to a 25-20 victory. Colby-Sawyer got to within 21-18 late in the set, but the Cadets finished on a 4-2 spurt to secure the win.

Colby-Sawyer came back strong in the second set, turning a close 16-14 contest into a 25-17 victory. The Chargers ended the set on a 9-3 run to secure the verdict.

CSC appeared to take control of the match in the third set as the Chargers rolled to a 25-9 win. The game was actually tied 8-8 in the early going before Colby-Sawyer reeled off a 17-1 run.

Norwich overcame an early 8-5 deficit in the fourth set to even the match at two games apiece. A 10-3 run by NU turned its 8-5 deficit into a 15-11 lead, and the Cadets held off the Chargers to pick up a 25-18 victory.

The fifth set went back and forth early with the score deadlocked at 2-2. A 7-1 scoring burst by Colby-Sawyer gave the visitors a 9-3 lead, and the Chargers never relinquished it en route to a 15-11 win.

Colby-Sawyer hosts Mass. College of Liberal Arts on Friday, October 9 at 7:00pm.
