HANOVER, N.H. – October 24, 2009- The Colby-Sawyer women's tennis team won the 2009 The Commonwealth Coast Conference championship after defeating Endicott, 5-2 at the Boss Center in Hanover, NH. The title is the Chargers' first since 1996.

 

Colby-Sawyer, the preseason favorite to win it all, earned their third TCCC title since joining the league and fifth conference title overall. Colby-Sawyer was a member of the New England Women's Athletic Conference (NEWAC) in 1993 and 1994. Endicott, the defending conference champion, was responsible for the Chargers' only loss this season with a 5-4 victory back on September 22. The Gulls defeated the Chargers in last season's championship match.

 

The Chargers took a 1-0 lead with an 8-3 win by Lauren Turenne (Reading, Mass.) and Claire Toffey (Barnstable, Mass.) at No. 3 doubles. Endicott won No. 1 and No. 2 doubles to take a 2-1 lead heading into singles matches. Kate Cioffi (Essex, Vt.) and Alyson Boehm (Lowell, Mass.) beat Jen LaChance (Killingworth, Conn.) and Hannah White (Stockbridge, Mass.), 9-7 at No. 1, while Nicole Breting (Johnston, R.I.) and Lori Wardner (Wrentham, Mass.) earned an 8-5 win at No. 2 over Mary Francis (North Steuben, Maine) and Brittany Mailman (Freedom, N.H.).

 

LaChance avenged the doubles loss with a 6-2, 6-0 straight sets win over Breting at the second flight to tie the match at 2-2. Francis also got redemption with a 6-4, 6-3 victory at No. 1 singles over Cioffi. Turenne gave the Chargers a 4-2 lead with a convincing 6-1, 6-1 victory against Kerri Dunn (Middleton, Mass.) at the fifth flight.

 

With the match and TCCC championship hanging in the balance, Colby-Sawyer freshman Claire Toffey won the most important collegiate match of her career to date. She defeated Boehm at No. 4 singles, 6-4, 6-1 to lift the Chargers to the 5-2 victory.

 

The Chargers finished the season with a 16-1 record, while the Gulls complete their season at 14-4.
