Colby-Sawyer Opens TCCC Play with 74-64 Win over Regis

NEW LONDON, N.H. – January 10, 2009 – The Colby-Sawyer women's basketball team opened TCCC play with a 74-64 victory over Regis, on Saturday afternoon. The Chargers have won two games in a row and are now 7-5 overall. Regis suffers its third loss of the season falling to 10-3 on the season.

The Pride of Regis opened the first half of play on an 8-0 run and held the Chargers scoreless for the first five minutes. The teams traded a couple of baskets before Colby-Sawyer found the groove, responding with an 8-1 run to tie the game at 14-14. Senior Kali Coleman (Portsmouth, N.H.) knocked down two three-pointers in that stretch for the Chargers. The remainder of the half was evenly played until junior Jessica Page (Quincy, Mass.) hit two free-throws to give the Pride a 39-37 lead at the break. Page finished 11 points in the first half. Leading the way for Regis through the first 20 minutes was senior Kim Mariotti (Springfield, Mass.) who tallied a game-high 16 points.

The second half was a different story for the Pride who shot 44% in the first half, but could only muster 24% in the second. The Chargers increased their defensive pressure and started the second stanza on a 10-0 run behind eight points from junior Terri Duffy (Marshfield, Mass.). Regis was held scoreless for the first eight minutes before Page knocked down four consecutive free throws. The Pride score their first field-goal with 10:40 left on a Stephanie Crawford (Rockland, Mass.) layup. The basket gave Regis some momentum as they cut the lead to two points but could never overcome the deficit.

Senior Kayt Racz (Worthington, Mass.) knocked down two three-pointers down the stretch, which gave Colby-Sawyer its biggest lead of 13 with 4:37 left to play. Regis cut into the lead once again on five straight points from Page, making the score 65-52. The Chargers responded quickly with five straight points from senior Emma Pasquale (Eliot, Maine) including a three-pointer off the glass. Colby-Sawyer closed the game on a 9-2 run to secure the victory.

Sophomore Sarah McNult (Hampstead, N.H.) grabbed a game-high 12 rebounds for the Pride. Page finished with a game-high 24 points on 7-15 shooting. Mariotti had a solid game with 21 points (9-14 fg), three assists and three steals.

Duffy registered a team-high 20 points and nine rebounds. Pasquale was perfect from the floor (6-6) good for 13 points and made five blocks. Racz was also perfect from the field (4-4) with all of her baskets coming from beyond the arc. She finished with 13 points and five rebounds.

The Chargers continue their home stand on Tuesday, January 13 with a contest against New England College at 5:30 p.m. Regis travels to Salve Regina on January 13, for a game at 6:00 p.m.
