Chargers Fall to Bowdoin, 54-45

NEW LONDON, N.H. – December 11, 2008 – The Colby-Sawyer women's basketball team dropped their first home game of the season to Bowdoin, 54-45 on Thursday evening. The Chargers were unable to overcome a one point halftime deficit as they fall to 5-4 on the young season while Bowdoin improves to 6-2.

The Polar Bears led through much of the first half behind the play of Katie Bergeron (Bradley, Maine) and Caitlin Hynes (Owl's Head, Maine). Bergeron scored six points, while Hynes led her team with four rebounds and added four points of her own.

The Chargers were able to grab their first lead of the night with 4:23 remaining in the first half, when junior Terri Duffy (Marshfield, Mass.) scored on a lay-up. It appeared as if the Chargers were heading into the locker room with a two point lead, until Bergeron banked in one of her two three-pointers off the glass as the buzzer sounded, giving the Polar Bears a 23-22 halftime advantage.

Bowdoin opened up the second half with a 6-0 run, but the Chargers bounced right back, scoring seven unanswered points, tying the score at 29 apiece. The Polar Bears proved to be too much for the Chargers as they pulled away behind a 5-0 run. Leah Rubega (Norwich, Conn.) played a strong second half for Bowdoin as she nearly recorded a triple-double, registering 10 points, 10 rebounds and seven steals. Polar Bear's senior Maria Noucas (Portsmouth, N.H.) finished with a game-high 14 points and Bergeron ended her night with 12 points.

Colby-Sawyer was led by Kali Coleman (Portsmouth, N.H.) with 13 points, shooting 3-5 from behind the arc. Senior Emma Pasquale (Eliot, Maine) led the Chargers with eight rebounds and tallied four blocks.

The Chargers are off from until after the Holidays, when they travel to RPI on January 6. The team's next home game with be on January 8, when they host Middlebury at 5:30 p.m.
