Gene Smith

Gene Smith, the 13th head coach in women's soccer program history, will begin his second season with the Chargers in 2019. 

Smith led the Chargers to earn the sixth seed in their first year with the Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC). 

Smith, who brings 15 years of coaching experience that spans all three NCAA divisions, joined the Colby-Sawyer family in the summer of 2018 after spending the past two seasons at Division I Marist College. As the women's soccer head coach in 2017, Smith guided the Red Foxes to an 8-8-3 overall record and a 5-3-2 mark in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC). He was an assistant coach in 2016.  

Prior to Marist, Smith was the women's soccer head coach for two years at Division II Davis and Elkins College in West Virginia. Smith led the Senators to a 25-11-3 overall record, was named Great Midwest Athletic Conference (GMAC) Coach of the Year, won a regular season championship, earned an NCAA Midwest Regional Ranking, and coached several all-conference honorees and major award winners.

Previously, Smith led a nationally ranked program at California University of Pennsylvania. The team was 34-8-3 under Smith's tutelage and reached the NCAA second round in 2012 and third round in 2013.

Smith also spent five seasons as the women's soccer head coach at nearby Plymouth State.

Smith received a BA in Psychology and English from Norwich and an MS in Sports Leadership from Northeastern. He also received an MBA from California University of Pennsylvania.
