WOMEN'S SOCCER SHINE UNDER THE LIGHTS TO HAND BUCCANEERS 3-1 LOSS

NEW LONDON, N.H. – The Colby-Sawyer College women's soccer team rallied from an early deficit on Tuesday evening, using two goals from first-year Sophia Wooten to top Massachusetts Maritime Academy, 3-1, in non-conference action at Kelsey Field.

Rapid Recap:

  • Mass. Maritime opened the scoring early, striking at the 9:55 mark when Audrey Tombeno set up Karah Deveau for a finish to give the Buccaneers a 1-0 advantage.

  • Colby-Sawyer leveled the contest late in the first half. Senior Ellie Smith (Plymouth, Mass.) linked up with Sophia Wooten (Griswold, Conn.), who beat the keeper with a beautiful high arc of a shot at 35:30 to send both teams into the intermission deadlocked at 1-1.

  • The Chargers grabbed the lead less than eight minutes into the second half. Junior Kate Vasconcelos (Woodsville, N.H.) delivered a pass to Wooten, who slotted home her second tally of the match at 52:51 to make it 2-1.

  • Colby-Sawyer sealed the victory down the stretch when junior Grace Ellis (Easton, Maine) fed senior Stella Lavertue (Claremont, N.H.), who found the back of the net at 83:19 to extend the margin to 3-1.
