CASTLETON, Vt. – The Colby-Sawyer College field hockey team suffered its first loss of the 2026 campaign on Wednesday night, falling 6-5 in overtime to Vermont State University Castleton in a back-and-forth thriller at Dave Wolk Stadium.

Castleton struck in the first 6:41 into the contest, but Colby-Sawyer leveled things before the end of the opening quarter. At the 11:36 mark, sophomore Jillian Fredette (Weare, N.H.) connected with sophomore Zoe Dries (Windham, Maine), who slotted home her first goal of the night to tie the score at 1-1.

The Chargers took their first lead midway through the second frame on another setup by Fredette, finding junior Brooke Farquhar (Gorham, Maine) for a finish at 21:25 to send Colby-Sawyer into halftime ahead 2-1.

After the Spartans tied the match early in the second half, Colby-Sawyer unleashed a dominant third-quarter offensive attack. Farquhar scored back-to-back goals within a 51-second span—first converting Fredette's third assist at 38:38 before adding an unassisted tally at 39:29 to complete her hat trick. Dries followed at 42:38 by burying her second goal of the evening off Fredette's fourth assist, ballooning the Charger lead to 5-2 heading into the final frame.

Castleton answered with a furious fourth-quarter rally, striking three times in a span of under three minutes to knot the contest at 5-5 and force sudden-death overtime.

Just 1:11 into the extra session, Castleton's Gwyn Vincent broke through the defense and tucked home the game-winner at 61:11 to close out the decision.
