MEN'S BASKETBALL FALLS TO SPARTANS IN OVERTIME THRILLER

New London, N.H. – The Colby-Sawyer men's basketball team played Vermont State Castleton in a non-conference matchup at the Hogan Sports Center on Tuesday evening. 

Rapid Recap:  

  • Tobey Bellows opened the scoring for the Chargers with a three-pointer thirty seconds into the game. Logan Lapierre Caissie (Ontario, Canada) and Elijah Thomas (Fairfax, VA) both added buckets as the Chargers would trail 11-7. Junior Efosa would make a basket, and later a free throw as the deficit stayed at 4. Thomas put up four more points to tie the game up at 21. Bellows made a three, as the Chargers would lead 24-23. Thomas scored a layup in the last minute of the first half, and the Spartans would lead 36-32 at the halftime break. 

  • Lapierre Caissie scored a basket early in the second half to make it a 36-34 ball game. Emmanuel Adarkwa (Lawrenceville, GA) knocked down a jumper. Moments later, the Spartans would lead 50-40, but the next six points were all Colby-Sawyer as the score became 50-46. Bellows would knock down another three as the score was 52-49. With eight minutes to go, Bellows would score five more points to make it a 60-56 lead for the Spartans. An Adarkwa jumper would give the Chargers a one-point lead with 4:39 left in the game. Efosa scored a layup to give the Chargers a four-point lead with 1:35 left. The teams would be even at 71 at the end of regulation, needing some overtime basketball to decide the game. 

  •  Sean Peterson (Chester, N.H.) made two free throws to give the Chargers a two-point lead early in overtime. About a minute later, two made free throws by Efosa would give the Chargers a one-point lead with 3:47 left in the overtime period. With 32 seconds left on the clock, Peterson made a layup, as the Spartans would lead by two. The Spartans would go on to win the game 86-81. 

Inside the Numbers: 

  • Bellows ended the game with 19 points, making five from three-point-range. This was Bellows' highest scoring game of the season so far. 

  • Thomas finished the game with 19 points, nine rebounds, and five assists. 

  • Efosa finished the game with 16 points and eight rebounds. 

  • Will Radcliff led the scoring for the Spartans with 30 points. 

  • The Chargers scored 48 points in the paint.

The Chargers return to the Hogan Sports Center after Thanksgiving to play Fitchburg State University on Sunday at 3pm.
