NEW LONDON, N.H. - The Colby-Sawyer field hockey team fell to Saint Joseph's College of Maine in the quarterfinal round of the Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GANC) tournament 2-1 on Saturday afternoon.
Rapid Recap:
- The Chargers and Monks came to battle Saturday afternoon with both teams trading shots back and forth. The Monks would score first in the game in the 12th minute to take a 1-0 lead over the Chargers at the end of the first quarter.
- The Chargers continued to battle and went on the attack early in the second quarter with sophomore Abby Olden (Belchertown, Mass.) firing back-to-back shots, but Monk goalkeeper Kassidy Collins made big saves to keep the Monks ahead. A minute later, Olden would tie the game at 1-1 with a goal of her own off of an assist from senior Sabrina Lippold (Windham, N.H.). The Monks would respond one minute later with a goal to take a 2-1 lead heading into halftime.
- The third quarter remained scoreless as the Monks led the Chargers 2-1. Both teams would fire shots back and forth, but neither team was able to find the back of the net.
- The Monks continued to stay on the attack early in the fourth quarter firing a shot on target but senior goalkeeper Carly Bernard (Swanze, N.H.) made keys saves for the Chargers. The Chargers would then go on the attack with back-to-back penalty corners, as junior Taylor Gaudette (North Conway, N.H.) would fire a shot on target, but it would be saved by Collins. The Monks would then go on the attack with a penalty corner of their own and fired a shot on target, but Bernard made the save to keep the Chargers within one goal of the Monks. The Chargers would get one last attempt on the attack as first-year Brooke Farquhar (Gorham, Maine), Olden, and Lippold would all fire shots of their own, but were unable to find the back of the net as the Monks would take the 2-1 victory.
Inside the Numbers:
- The Monks outshot the Chargers 12-11 with 11-6 shots on target differential.
- Bernard recorded nine saves in net for the Chargers.
