CHARGERS SHUT OUT BEAVERS IN 3-0 WIN

NEW LONDON, N.H. – The Colby-Sawyer field hockey team cruised to a 3-0 victory over the University of Maine-Farmington Beavers Sunday afternoon. The Chargers improve their record to 9-3, and a 6-1 record in conference play.  
  
Rapid Recap:  
  • The Chargers and Beavers traded shots back and forth in the first quarter as senior Alyssa Slocum (Windsor, Vt.) and first-year Ava Bennett (Hampstead, N.H.) fired shots on target, but key saves by the Beavers goalie Ella Grant kept the game at 0-0. The Chargers continued to stay on the attack with back-to-back penalty corners, but Grant stood tough in the net. Junior Cecillia Ponzini (Windham, N.H.) capitalized on the Chargers penalty corner to give the home team a 1-0 lead at the end of the first quarter.  
  • The Chargers continued their offensive pressure in the second quarter with shots by senior Sabrina Lippold (Windham, N.H.) and sophomore Abby Olden (Belchertown, Mass.), but Grant made big saves to keep the Beavers within one goal. Minutes later Olden found the back of the net to give the Chargers a 2-0 lead off of an assist from Slocum. The Chargers stayed on the attack late in the second quarter and had many scoring opportunities with shots by senior Destiny Cruz (Fall River, Mass.) and Ponzini, but Grant made key saves as the Chargers took the 2-0 lead heading into halftime.  
  • The Chargers continued their offensive pressure in the third quarter as Slocum fired back-to-back shots, but Grant stayed tough in the net. Penalty corners by Bennett and Olden gave the Chargers several opportunities to increase their lead, as Ponzini and Olden fired shots, but Grant made key saves for the Beavers. The Beavers continued to fight back going on the attack late in the third quarter, but a tough Charger defense stopped the Beaver's offensive momentum as the Chargers maintained a 2-0 lead as the third quarter came to a close.  
  • The Chargers never let off the gas in the fourth quarter, keeping their offensive pressure high. Shot by first-year Brooke Farquhar (Gorham, Maine) and Slocum and minutes later Farquhar scored the third goal of the game with the assist coming from sophomore Eli Connor (Henniker, N.H.). The Chargers continued to dominate on the offensive end as graduate student Chloe Makela (York, Maine) and Farquhar fired shots on target, but Beaver goalie made big saves for the visiting team. The Chargers concluded the game victorious with a 3-0 win over the visiting Beavers.

"It felt great to win today," said first-year Ashlee Blashock (Lebanon, N.H.). "I continue to be impressed with how our team adapts to overcome each of the opponents we play. Our ability to make the adjustments needed is what helped us win today. It was a great team effort. Everyone did their job and supported each other on the field to make this possible. Lastly, I'd like to thank God for our teams skill set and ability to work together. It truly is great to see."
 
 
Inside The Numbers:  
  • The Chargers outshot the Beavers 29-4 with a 17-3 on target differential.  
  • The Chargers led the way with a 25-1 penalty corner differential over the Beavers.  
  • Slocum and Connor each added an assist.   
  • First-year Ashlee Blashock (Lebanon, N.H.) recorded three saves in the Chargers win and improves her record in the net to 4-0.

The Chargers return to action on Saturday as they travel to Providence, Rhode Island to take on reigning GNAC conference champions Johnson and Wales University with a 3:00 PM start.
