Chargers Come Up Short in the GNAC Championship Against Johnson & Wales

PROVIDENCE, R.I.  – On Saturday the Colby-Sawyer field hockey team fell in the Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) Championship to Johnson & Wales by a 4-1 final. 

Rapid Recap:
  • The first quarter only saw one shot as Izzy Ward tried to get the Wildcats on the board, but junior Carly Bernard (Swanze, N.H.) stayed strong with the save. In the second the home team jumped ahead in the 17th minute as Margaret Johnson lifted a goal off a save by Bernard to take the lead. The advantage doubled in the 21st minute as Rayne Millett scored on an assist by Katie Sloan to head to the final half. 
  • The Wildcats continued with the momentum in the third quarter getting two more scores by Kameron Marando and Ava Pontes to jump the lead to four headed into the final 15 minutes. First year Ryleigh LaPorte (Leicester, Vt.) registered the first shot for the Chargers in the 35th minute, but Sophia Brea stayed in strong. Colby-Sawyer showed life in the fourth quarter getting a late score by senior Aleah Murph (Portland, Maine) on an assist by sophomore Claire Stroshine (Keene, N.H.). The Wildcats held on for the victory at 4-1. 
Inside The Numbers: 
  • Bernard stopped seven shots in the cage in the loss.
  • Murph added her ninth goal of the season, while Stroshine netted her first collegiate assist. 
  • After the game Bernard, junior Sabrina Lippold (Windham, N.H.) and Murph were named to the GNAC All-Tournament Team. 
Up Next:  
The Chargers end the 2023 season with an overall record of 14-5 with a 9-3 GNAC record.
