PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Chargers field hockey team ended their Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) tournament run against Johnson & Wales University, 1-0, in the semifinals on Wednesday afternoon.
Rapid Recap:
- The Chargers were able to keep the Wildcats attack at bay thanks to two defensive saves by senior Bella Silva (Danvers, Mass.) and two saves by senior goalkeeper Lauren Wilkinson (Lynn, Mass.) in the first period to keep the score tied at 0-0. Early in the second period, Johnson & Wales dominated possession continuing to apply pressure to Colby-Sawyer's defensive. Junior Aleah Murph (Portland, Maine) was able to make another defensive save for the Chargers, her sixth of the season. At the 25th minute, Zofia Bangs notched a goal to give the Wildcats a 1-0 lead heading into halftime.
- In the third period, the Chargers weathered the attacking storm by the Wildcats with Wilkinson making another critical save in the 35th minute. Colby-Sawyer pushed their offensive in the fourth period and was able to earn five penalty corners in the final minutes of the match but Bangs goal would be enough to lift the Wildcats past the Chargers.
Stats & Figures:
- Silva's two defensive saves were her first of the year. Murph tallied her sixth defensive save of the season, putting her with nine in her career. With the nine defensive saves Murph becomes the all-time leader in Charger history for defensive saves.
- Wilkinson finished the afternoon with six saves and allowed one goal after playing in net for the Chargers.
