Chargers Propel Past Salem State 2-0

SALEM, Mass. - The Colby-Sawyer women's soccer team defeated Salem State University in a non-conference match on Thursday night. The Chargers improve their overall record to 6-7-2 on the season with the victory over the Vikings. 

Rapid Recap: 
  • The Vikings put early pressure on the Chargers defensive getting three shots in the opening 10 minutes of the match. Colby-Sawyer responded quickly by getting a couple shots on target from sophomore Bridget O'Connell (Peabody, Mass.) and senior Halle Pletzer (Barre, Vt.). In the 15th minute, junior Kara Keiper (Peterborough, N.H.) found the back of the net thanks to the assist from senior Grace Walsh (Marstons Mills, Mass.) to give the Chargers the 1-0 advantage. Colby-Sawyer continued to push their attack forcing the Vikings goalkeeper Lily Pfefferle to make six saves to keep the score at 1-0 heading into halftime. 
  • Early in the second half, Pletzer was able to find O'Connell who notched the Chargers second goal of the night to extend their lead 2-0. Macy Hudzik and Madison Ryan each rattled off a shot apiece in the 59thminute that were saved by senior goalkeeper Alexis LeBreton (Bangor, Maine). The game continued to be back-and-forth with Salem State recording five shots and Colby-Sawyer tallying eight shots, but the match would conclude with the 2-0 final. 
Stats & Figures:
  • Pletzer ended the night with an assist as well as getting four of her five shots on target. O'Connell and Keiper each scored the only two goals of the night to help propel the Chargers past the Vikings. 
  • LeBreton earned their fifth shutout of the season after making seven saves in net for the Chargers. 
  • The Chargers outshot the Vikings 22-10-with Colby-Sawyer leading with a 16-8 margin in shots on target.   
Up Next: 
The Chargers will host their next GNAC match against Rivier University on Saturday, October 15th at 3:00 PM. The Chargers will also honor the nine seniors before the contest for Senior Day festivities.
