NEW LONDON, N.H. – After a two-year layoff, and under the helm of first-year coach, Carlos Dominguez, Colby-Sawyer Men's Rugby hosted and placed first in the initial sevens tournament of the season on Sunday as part of New England Rugby Football Union's (NERFU) Developmental fall sevens series. Champlain College, Franklin-Pierce and New England College also fielded sides after long layoffs, finishing 3rd, 4th and 2nd respectively.
The Chargers saw strong play from first-years Aedan Amos,
Matt Daly and Victor Ngandini, sophomore
Nick Carswell, juniors
Connor Molkenthin and
Andrew Londergan and seniors
Troy Cappos and
Jacob Walker but relied on the entire roster throughout the day.
In their first match against perennial power, New England College, Colby-Sawyer held on for a tight 12-5 victory. Similarly, the Chargers held on 12-5 against a deep Franklin Pierce team, but fell to Champlain 0-22 in their third match, which proved inconsequential.
In the final, a rematch between CSC and NEC, Colby-Sawyer dotted down two tries (Molkenthin and Ngandini) and Cappos converted both kicks. Relentless defense and tackling allowed the Chargers to hold on despite strong runs by NEC.
The Chargers head to New England College next Saturday (10/2) for the second sevens event of the season, which kicks off at noon on the NEC campus.
