NEW LONDON, N.H. – October 26, 2019 – Colby-Sawyer first-year
Sydney Jimmo (Shelburne, Vt.) scored with 27 seconds left to play to propel the Chargers to a 2-1 Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) victory over Albertus Magnus on Saturday afternoon at Kelsey Field.
Prior to the match, Colby-Sawyer honored its seniors for their contributions to the women's soccer program.
Raina Ceryak (Naugatuck, Conn.),
Leah Dupuis (Concord, N.H.),
Alexis LaPointe (Abington, Mass.),
Molly MacLure (Westford, Mass.), and
Sam Mitchell (Chester, N.H.) were recognized. Colby-Sawyer also thank
Addyson Stadler of Team Impact for her three years of commitment to the Chargers.
Colby-Sawyer improves to 8-10 overall and 5-6 in the GNAC. The Chargers will wrap up the regular season at Simmons on Wednesday. Albertus Magnus drops to 7-7-1 overall and 4-6-1 in conference play.
The game-winning play was set up by
Leah Dupuis who found Jimmo at the top of the 18-yard box. Jimmo then struck the ball into the far-right side of the goal to send the Chargers home with a victory.
The visitors got on the scoreboard first with a goal in the 12th minute. Sophomore Haley Andrews (Prospect, Conn.) possessed the ball in the middle of the pitch, 30 yards from goal. She ripped a shot into the upper left corner of the goal that was unsavable.
Colby-Sawyer found an equalizer in the 78th minute when Albertus Magnus was whistled for a hand ball in the box leading to an indirect kick from the edge of the 6-yard box. First-year
Sophia Chirigotis (Merrimac, Mass.) tapped the ball to Jimmo who kept the shot low and under the wall. The ball got by everyone and made the score 1-1.
With less than 10 minutes to play, the Chargers turned up the pressure, which led to a few chances to take the lead. The match remained tied, however, as Colby-Sawyer hit a crossbar, a post and had a penalty shot turned away by Falcons goalie Cassidy Scofield (Shelton, Conn.).
The home team showed resiliency and was able to secure the victory with the last-minute goal.
Colby-Sawyer goalie
Sam Mitchell was terrific in net with a pair of saves and a couple of other stellar plays that prevented more chances. Albertus Magnus goalie Cassidy Scofield also played well, keeping the Falcons in the contest with eight saves.
